On Friday evening, DCP (traffic) Himanshu Garg issued a letter to all senior cops and traffic inspectors to ensure that from Monday onwards, the new guidelines are adhered to. Garg stressed the move was crucial to ease congestions on the Delhi-Gurugram border.

“In order to prevent obstruction, injury and annoyance to the public due to extreme traffic congestion at Delhi-Gurugram border (Sirhaul toll), I extend the restrictions on the movement of Goods and Transport vehicles in the evening… All traffic inspectors are charged with the responsibility to implement the orders under the supervision of ACP traffic HQ/East and ACP traffic west in their respective areas with due regard to the safety of the public,” Garg wrote.

According to an order by the Gurgaon Municipal Corporation this February, goods vehicles are banned within the city limits between 5 pm and 9 pm. On Monday and Friday now, the restrictions will be extended up to 10.30pm. The move, cops believe, will ease snarls particularly on the Sirhaul toll, where 21 lanes of NH-8 on the Gurugram side converges into mere four lanes on the Delhi side.

That Monday and Friday witnesses increased footfall of vehicles has been mentioned in a monthly congestion report by the traffic cops. Several vehicles shuttle between Delhi and Gurugram on these two days due to the weekend and start of the week. The situation becomes dire during the evening, when truck, tractors and other heavy commercial vehicles mingle with the city traffic, leading to long tailbacks up to Shankar Chowk.

“On Fridays, several people leave for Delhi due to the weekend or for their homes in other parts of NCR. On Monday, the first day of the week, there’s increased load again. So, to manage these two days, new restrictions have to be brought in place,” Garg said.
