Mahindra Logistics Expands Eastward: Boosting Warehousing and Delivery Capabilities

Integrated logistics service provider Mahindra Logistics Ltd has planned a huge expansion across the Eastern and North Eastern regions of India. The new direction ‘Go East’ reflects the intention to take advantage of opportunities in the region, especially e-commerce, quick commerce, and FMCG that the logistics industry has not adequately exploited.

In the following discussions with Rampraveer Swaminathan – Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Logistics Limited, there was an articulated vision. ”Our most strategic initiative has been the Go East program,” he said after pointing at the recent soft opening of a big facility in Guwahati that is powered by renewable energy. This particular warehouse should be fully functioning approximately by mid-next month and customers are being sourced at the moment.

This expansion does not, however, end here. Mahindra Logistics is soon going to expand into two significant warehouse verticals in Kolkata. The first, a 400,000 square feet platinum-level building, will be commissioned in November. The second Kolkata warehouse is expected to roll over the operations in the next eighteen months. Expansion plans are a 140,000 sq ft warehouse in Agartala, which will go live in phases by March next year, and the new facility in Patna Bihar which is expected to be operational by summer next year.

This movement eastward is not unique; it is part of a long-term growth strategy. Mahindra Logistics currently focuses on augmenting its total warehousing capacity from 19 million sq ft to 30 million sq ft. The firm has already started taking these actions, and within one year, it has achieved an addition of 1.5 million sq ft of warehousing space facilities in western India.

The “Go East” strategy also looks at improving the delivery capacities. Swaminathan added, “Currently we have ready without express logistics services more than 800 pin codes and it is continuously adding 100 pin codes, especially for B2C delivery to the end consumer.” This expansion will open new possibilities in the company’s extent and speed in the region.

According to Swaminathan, there is so much room for fortification in the eastern market especially for the automotive industry. The company’s dynamics are indicative of its efforts to leverage the unexplored Eastern segment of India to drive the growth and expansion of Mahindra Logistics in the future years.
