Mormugao Port handles 20.78 mt Cargo during FY 2015-16

Mormugao Port handled 20.78 million tonnes (mt) cargo as compared to 14.71 mt handled during corresponding period of last year, an increase of 41 %.

The traffic during the year mainly consisted of 3.57 mt of iron ore exports, 12.27 mt of coal/coke and 1.06 mt of petroleum products and other liquid cargo.

The remaining traffic consisted of cargoes like Fertilizer, Alumina, Containerized cargo, H.R.Steel Coils, Bauxite, Granite, Pig Iron, Lime Stone, Wood Chips, Nickel etc.

The general cargo traffic was 15.75 mt. Gross tonnage of 345426 tonnes (in 25539 TEU) of containerized cargo was also handled at the port during the period. Mormugao Port was occupying prominent position as India’s premier iron ore exporting port.

However, due to ban on export of iron ore merely 6,04,178 tonnes of iron ore could be exported through this port during the year 2014-15.

During the financial year 2014-2015 the port handled traffic of 14.71 mt thereby registering remarkable 25% growth. In the process MPT has recorded the highest growth rate on a year to year basis, among all the 12 Major Ports in India.

The Port has also surpassed the target of 13.35 mt set by the Ministry of Shipping, registering an increase of 10%.
