Govt. started drive against overloaded trucks

Delhi government’s transport department has started a special drive against overloaded trucks in a bid to check air pollution in the city.

The department has stepped up action against overloaded trucks at all checkpoints in the city. Approximately one lakh goods vehicles, including trucks of all sizes, enter Delhi every day.

The drive began on from Friday and checks are being carried out between 8pm and 4am every day. As part of the drive, enforcement officials are prosecuting overloaded trucks as these emit comparatively more effluents and are also pose accidental hazards.

A transport department official said that more than 10 teams of enforcement officials have been deployed to check all border points in the city.

The department is levying a fine of Rs 4,000 for every extra tonne that a truck is found carrying above the permissible limit.

Delhi government’s transport department has geared up to check air pollution ever since the Graded Response Action Plan came into effect in the capital recently.

The first drive carried out by the department was against vehicles that were found carrying an invalid Pollution under Control Certificate or were visibly polluting the air.

The department is also carrying out another drive at Inter-State Bus Terminals to check roadways buses coming from other states to Delhi. Almost half of all the buses checked at the ISBTs were found to be polluting and were fined.
