Will address Truckers concerns on licences

MP Rao Inderjit Singh, who is eyeing a third term from the constituency, on Sunday promised to address the issue of renewal of truckers driving licences.

GURUGRAM: Touching upon one of the most pressing concerns for people in Mewat, incumbent MP Rao Inderjit Singh, who is eyeing a third term from the constituency, on Sunday promised to address the issue of renewal of truckers driving licences.

TOI had earlier reported that in a region notorious for cow vigilantism, the bigger worry for the locals is the non-renewal of licences for truck drivers. According to rough estimates, Mewat has a population of about 14 lakh. Locals say more than 60% of the people here are truck drivers. A chunk of this population is illiterate or has only studied till primary school. Ever since the process of getting a licence shifted online, these people have been struggling as an Aadhaar card or a Class 10 certificate is now required.

During a series of meetings at various villages, Inderjit assured the Meo voters that he is aware of their problems and will address them. “The state government is working to find out the solution to this issue,” he said.

With 5.31 lakh, or nearly one-fourth of Gurugram’s 20.34 lakh voters, the Muslim-dominated district can play a crucial role in deciding which way the seat goes.

Inderjit, who won the Gurugram seat on a Congress ticket in 2009 and as a BJP candidate in 2014, is facing growing disenchantment here, with locals often complaining that he has been ‘missing’ and rarely visits.

On Sunday, the MP said that unlike the previous government which treated Mewat only as a vote-bank, the BJP government had worked for the development of the district.

Taking a dig at the Congress candidate, Inderjit said Captain Ajay Yadav, when he was earlier irrigation minister, had rejected a proposal to construct a canal for Mewat and refused to allot funds for it. “The BJP government constructed the Mewat feeder canal and it has been of great help to farmers and common people,” he said.
Listing out other works done, he said the Union government had approved the route of the Delhi-Mumbai expressway mega project via Mewat. This, he said, will lead to the district’s development.

The BJP government also completed the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway project, he said, adding that it was supposed to have been completed before the 2010 Commonwealth Games but had been delayed by the previous government.

He also pointed to the Nagina-Tijara road that was kicked off by the BJP government. Besides this, the Rs 36,000-crore industrial railway corridor project, he said, will change the face of Mewat.

Inderjit told the villagers that Mewat will witness “rapid development” in the coming years, and several youths had got government jobs on merit, which was “possible only due to policies of the state government”. “Earlier getting a government job without corruption and recommendation was unthinkable,” he added.
Inderjit said that in his next term, he will work for setting up a university and railway line in the district.
