Senior officials said that three RTO squads would be moving around the district to keep a check on overloaded vehicles and impose a fine.

Officials said that overloaded vehicles not only damage the road but the drivers are also not able to control their vehicles. There have been many accidents on the highways due to overloaded trucks.

The officials added that a few years back, a gas tanker descending from the Rahud Ghat on the Mumbai-Agra highway near Chandwad and heading towards Malegaon had jumped the divider after its driver lost control of the vehicle.

It broke into the rear of a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus coming from the opposite direction, before hitting a car and a milk tanker. Five people died and 20 others seriously injured in the accident, added the officials.

Deputy RTO Vinay Ahire said the Nashik office was continuously taking action against such motorists. This year, the RTO has filed 586 cases of overloaded vehicles since April and also collected fine of Rs 55.60 lakh.

The officials said that there are clear guidelines with respect to the amount of load any vehicle is permitted to carry. However, many transporters violate this rule.

The RTO has received guidelines from the state transport office to lodge police complaints against truck drivers carrying more goods than the permitted limit under the provisions of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
