When Fraud Was Not Just in Freight – The FASTag Reality

While we were actively discussing and identifying fraud patterns in logistics, another layer of the problem started becoming visible.

This time, it was not directly about freight or truck booking.

It was about FASTag.

The Digital Shift – And Its Loopholes

India had already moved strongly towards digital tolling.

FASTag was a major step forward .

Reduced waiting time at toll plazas
• Improved efficiency on highways
• Enabled cashless transactions
• Brought transparency into toll collection

On paper, everything was moving in the right direction.

But on the ground, a different reality was emerging.

The Problem We Identified

We started noticing unusual patterns in the ecosystem.

FASTags being issued incorrectly

• Tags being switched between chassis number and vehicle registration number
• One vehicle using multiple tags across banks
• Continuous migration from one bank to another

And the most critical part:

👉 Vehicles leaving behind negative balances in previous accounts

How the Scam Worked

The model was simple, but impactful.

A vehicle would get a FASTag issued from one bank
• Usage would continue until balance goes negative
• Before settlement, a new FASTag would be issued from another bank
• The same cycle would repeat

This created:

Financial loss for issuing banks
• Lack of accountability
• No clear traceability
• Misuse of digital infrastructure

Why This Was a Serious Concern

At first glance, this may look like a small operational issue.

But in reality, it was much bigger.

Because FASTag is not just a payment system.

It is becoming a digital identity layer for vehicles on highways.

If that layer is compromised:

Trust breaks
• Data becomes unreliable
• Systems lose efficiency
• Stakeholders lose confidence

A Bigger Realisation

At this stage, one thing became very clear to us.

The future of logistics is not just digital.

It is digitally secure.

Because:

👉 Digitisation without control creates new risks
👉 Systems without validation create loopholes

From Challenge to Opportunity

While this was a concern, we did not see it only as a problem.

We saw it as an opportunity.

An opportunity to:

Introduce stronger validation mechanisms
• Build accountability in digital transactions
• Create a trusted ecosystem across stakeholders
• Set new benchmarks in logistics and highway systems

Because this was not just about fixing a loophole.

This was about strengthening the foundation of digital logistics in India.

Connecting the Dots

If we look closely, both problems we identified were connected.

In Freight:

Fraudsters misusing pricing and trust

In FASTag:

Misuse of identity and financial systems

The common gap was:

👉 Lack of verification
👉 Lack of accountability
👉 Lack of a unified trust layer

What This Meant for Us

This phase pushed us to think beyond traditional logistics solutions.

It was no longer just about:

Load matching
• Truck availability
• Cost optimisation

It was about:

Identity verification
• Transaction security
• Ecosystem trust

Startup Lessons From This Phase

1. Every Digital System Has a Shadow Side

As systems evolve, misuse evolves faster.

2. Small Gaps Can Create Big Problems

What looks like a minor loophole can impact the entire ecosystem.

3. Trust Needs Infrastructure

Trust cannot run on assumptions. It needs systems and validation.

4. Problems Are Signals for Innovation

Every gap you see is an opportunity to build something meaningful.

5. Think Beyond Your Core Product

Sometimes the biggest impact lies outside your current offering.

Closing Thought

This was a turning point in thinking.

We started with solving logistics problems.

But now, the direction was expanding.

From enabling movement
to securing movement
to building trust across the system

Because in the long run, the winners will not just be the ones who move goods faster.

They will be the ones who make the system safer and more reliable.
