August 2024: From an Idea to the First Test

For months, we had been asking one question:

Can a vehicle simply keep moving while technology takes care of identification and payment in the background? 

There had been discussions.

There had been meetings.

There had been conversations with authorities and ecosystem stakeholders.

There had been research around FASTag, ANPR, vehicle identification and seamless tolling.

But eventually, every idea has to leave the meeting room.

August 2024 was when we started taking that step.

It was not a big commercial launch.

There was no grand announcement.

It was simply the beginning of testing what we had been thinking about for months.

And sometimes, that first test is more important than a big announcement.

From FASTag to Something Bigger

FASTag had already transformed the way India thought about toll payments.

But we had always believed that its possibilities could go much further.

The basic thought remained very simple.

A vehicle is moving on the road.

The system already has information about that vehicle.

The vehicle has a registration number.

It may have a FASTag linked to it.

There are cameras and digital infrastructure available.

So why should the vehicle have to stop repeatedly?

Could ANPR identify the vehicle through its registration plate?

Could that identity be mapped with the FASTag ecosystem?

Could the relevant transaction happen in the background?

Could this eventually become useful beyond toll collection?

These questions had been running through our minds for quite some time.

Now we started experimenting with them.

ANPR Meets FASTag

During August, we started implementing ANPR as a test and exploring its integration with FASTag.

On paper, the flow looked straightforward.

Vehicle approaches – Camera reads registration number – System identifies vehicle – FASTag mapping is checked – Transaction is initiated – Vehicle continues moving.

But real roads are very different from PowerPoint presentations.

What happens if a number plate is dirty?

What if the font is unusual?

What if one character is incorrectly recognised?

What happens in poor lighting?

What if the registration number and FASTag information do not match?

What happens when there are multiple historical tags associated with the same vehicle?

What happens when the vehicle database itself contains inconsistencies?

Suddenly, what looked like a simple transaction became a much deeper technology problem.

And that was exactly why testing mattered.

One Vehicle, One FASTag Started Making Even More Sense

The developments around One Vehicle, One FASTag earlier in the year had already pushed the ecosystem towards cleaner mapping between vehicles and FASTags.

While such changes created temporary difficulties for some users and ecosystem participants, we could also see why cleaner data would become increasingly important.

If transportation infrastructure was eventually going to become intelligent, the identity behind every transaction had to be reliable.

A camera could recognise a registration number.

FASTag could enable the financial transaction.

But between those two points, there had to be a trusted digital layer.

That layer fascinated us.

The Industry Was Reminding Everyone About the Human Side Too

At the same time, developments around the trucking community continued to remind the country that logistics cannot be transformed through technology alone.

Concerns around the new hit-and-run provisions had created anxiety among truck drivers and transport organisations. Discussions between transport representatives and the government highlighted something we had experienced repeatedly throughout our journey.

Policies affecting transportation ultimately affect people sitting behind the steering wheel.

We had called truck drivers our Ustaads long before digital logistics became fashionable.

Our experience during COVID had made their importance even clearer.

So while we were experimenting with technologies capable of making highways smarter, one principle remained unchanged.

Technology should make the driver’s journey easier, not more complicated.

From R&D to Ground Reality

There is a big difference between saying:

“This technology should work.”

and actually making it work.

August was about crossing that gap.

Our objective was not to prove that ANPR existed. The technology was already available.

Our question was different.

Can we connect existing technologies in a way that solves an actual transportation problem?

That is where startups can create value.

Innovation does not always mean inventing every component yourself.

Sometimes innovation is understanding how different pieces can work together in a way that nobody has implemented effectively yet.

FASTag was one piece.

ANPR was another.

Vehicle databases were another.

Banking infrastructure was another.

Government systems were another.

Our job was to understand how these pieces could eventually speak to each other.

Imagine a Highway Without Transaction Stops

The larger vision remained exciting.

Imagine a commercial vehicle starting its journey from one state and travelling across India.

Its identity is digitally verified.

Applicable tolls are automatically processed.

Relevant road charges are calculated.

Compliance is digitally checked.

Transactions happen securely in the background.

The transporter receives visibility.

Authorities receive reliable data.

And the driver simply keeps driving.

No unnecessary queues.

No repetitive payments.

No avoidable stoppages.

That future was still some distance away.

But every future starts with someone testing whether the first connection can actually work.

For us, August 2024 became one of those small beginnings.

Startup Lessons

This phase gave us another set of lessons.

  • An idea becomes valuable only when it survives real-world testing.
  • Existing technologies can create entirely new possibilities when connected intelligently.
  • Clean data is as important as good technology.
  • Infrastructure innovation requires patience because multiple stakeholders have to move together.
  • Technology should reduce friction for people, not simply digitise existing friction.
  • Small pilots can eventually become the foundation of much larger systems.

Most importantly, we learned once again that you do not need a major announcement every month to be making progress.

Sometimes progress is a camera reading a number plate correctly.

Sometimes it is an API finally communicating with another system.

Sometimes it is discovering why something did not work.

And sometimes it is simply seeing an idea that existed in your mind begin to work in the real world.

August 2024 was one such month.

The experiment had started.

The pieces were slowly coming together.

And what had once been a conversation about the future of tolling was beginning to take the shape of something real.
