E-bus maker PMI Electro Mobility working on a range of electric trucks, intercity buses
Electric bus maker PMI Electro Mobility Solutions, a leading electric bus maker in India, is looking to get into manufacturing a complete range of electric trucks over the next three years in partnership with its technology provider, China’s Beiqi Foton Motors.
The company is also looking to get into the intercity electric bus market, which doesn’t exist yet in India due to higher range requirements compared to intra-city buses, Manvi Jain, head of corporate affairs at PMI Electro Mobility, said. It has agreed to conduct pilot trials with multiple state transport units and the trials will begin by the first quarter of FY24, she added.
The company is a subsidiary of leading bus body maker PMI Coaches. It has supplied about 720 electric buses to different state transport units as part of the government’s electric vehicle (EV) promotion scheme FAME-India.
For electric CVs, PMI is working on a portfolio of up to 15 vehicles across light to heavy categories. It will be relying on technology from its partner Foton and has lined up an investment of Rs 50-60 crore for product development. Foton already has a wide portfolio of electric CVs available in other markets.
The two companies are setting up a joint venture manufacturing plant near Pune at Chakan with an investment of Rs 250 crore. The plant will be ready in the coming 18 months, and it will help PMI double its annual production capacity to 5,000 vehicles from the current capacity of 2,500 units at its Dharuhera plant in Haryana, the company said.
