Centre mulls truck checks only at toll plazas
Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways is planning to implement a policy wherein goods carriers can be checked only at toll plazas of the country.
In a bid to minimise corruption, the Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways is planning to implement a policy wherein goods carriers can be checked only at toll plazas of the country.
This has been revealed by General VK Singh, MOS surface transport, during a two-day seminar of All India Transport Welfare Association in New Delhi on Tuesday.
“We have proposed to build specific places with the facility of proper cameras and lights to monitor the activities of police personnel and tax officials. It will bring transparency in working style of law enforcement agencies as well as it also gives a breather to the driver of the vehicles and transporters,” Singh said.
“The proposal is sent to the office of Nitin Gadkari, Union minister of surface transport,” Singh said.
The transporters have long complained that police of respective districts and other tax officers used to penalise truck drivers. As those places are not under surveillance, the chances of corruption cannot be ruled out.
“The transport sector is also facing an acute shortage of goods carrier drivers. According to the current scenario, there are only 600 professional drivers available for every 1000 goods carriers.
General VK Singh said that he will recommend this matter with ministry and government of India for possible amendment.
