Reduce Port Handling Charges at Kochi Port
The Greater Cochin Development Watch (GCDW) has asked the Union Ministry of Shipping to rescind the recent hike in the handling charges at the Kochi port.
The NGO, in a letter to the ministry, pointed out that the increase in the handling charges would adversely affect the port and the Vallarpadam container transhipment terminal, which is functioning far below its capacity.
The GCDW said that the terminal, which has a capacity to handle 1 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) of cargo, was now handling only 3.5 lakh TEU. The rate hike would further lower this.
