Tata Motors to enhance city transportation across India

Leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors has won orders for more than 2,700 buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission-II (JnNURM). The exact financial terms of this order have not been disclosed.

Under JnNURM-II scheme, a city-modernisation scheme launched by Indian government, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has given Tata Motors an order for 487 buses and similarly,  Himachal Road Transport Corporation has ordered 780. The company will be supplying Tata Marcopolo buses as per ‘urban bus specifications’ of the JnNURM-II scheme. Deliveries of these buses are expected to commence shortly.

Ravi Pisharody, Executive Director of the Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles Business Unit said,”Balancing affordability for passengers, along with a world-class metro-like experience and long-term economic viability is a need of every transport undertaking and we at TATA Motors are committed to that need.”

The ‘Urban’ buses from Tata Motors, meant for higher security in cities, are fitted with CCTV cameras, wider window panes, lower exit doors and also have Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for public information.

Through GPS via electronic destination display boards, the ITS displays expected time of arrival at bus stops and generates route announcements. Since these buses can be connected via a central control room server, they enhance the operational efficiency for state transport units.
