JNPA Embarks on Ambitious ‘Zero Emission Trucking’ Initiative, Replacing 6,500+Trucks with EVs

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced an ambitious plan to replace more than 6,500 trucks operating within its premises with battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative, dubbed ‘Zero Emission Trucking’ (ZET), aims to significantly reduce the port’s carbon footprint and contribute to a greener future for the logistics industry.

The transition to ZET will be carried out in phases over the next five years, with the first phase commencing within the next six months. During this initial stage, JNPA will convert over 15 trucks serving the Inter Terminal Rail Operations to electric-powered vehicles. This pilot phase will serve as a testing ground for the port’s larger ZET strategy.

Following the successful implementation of the first phase, JNPA will proceed to convert over 400 diesel-fueled trucks currently plying within the terminals for vessel and yard operations. This second phase is expected to be completed within the next couple of years, further reducing the port’s reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing emissions.

The final and most ambitious phase of the ZET strategy will involve the conversion of more than 6,500 trucks responsible for transporting containers to and from Container Freight Stations, as well as those operating at the Centralised Parking Plaza Trucks at terminals. This phase is scheduled to be completed within the next three to five years, marking a significant milestone in JNPA’s commitment to sustainability.

Currently, the majority of the trucks operating within the vast JNPA premises run on diesel fuel, contributing to substantial emissions and air pollution. By transitioning to an all-electric truck fleet, JNPA aims to drastically reduce these emissions, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for both its workforce and the surrounding communities.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority Chairman, Unmesh S Wagh, emphasized the critical importance of decarbonizing truck movements, particularly within port premises. He stated, “Recognizing the crucial role of decarbonizing truck movements, especially within port premises, JNPA has embarked on this ambitious plan to transition its truck fleet from diesel to electric power.”

The ‘Zero Emission Trucking’ strategy not only positions JNPA as a leader in sustainable port operations but also sets a precedent for other ports and logistics hubs to follow suit. By embracing clean energy solutions and prioritizing environmental responsibility, JNPA is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future in the maritime and logistics sectors.
