NASHIK: People to hold license of driving Heavy Commercial Vehicles now have to appear for a driving test when they come to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for renewing their driving license every three years.
The test is focused on the style of their driving and its effect on fuel consumption. If the concerned has used more than the expected amount of fuel during the test, his driving license is not renewed and he has to appear again for the test.
According to senior officials of the RTO in Nashik, the test began from April 1 this year. The test is only for truck and bus drivers. The number of such drivers is negligible compared to other driving license holder.
There are four driving schools for heavy vehicles. The concerned driving schools have been asked to purchase the fuel consumption equipment which is used while conduct the driving test of drivers of heavy vehicles for renewal of their license every three years.
The fuel consumption equipment comes out with a printed statement of fuel consumption. If the driver has consumed more fuel that what is expected, he is failed in the test and has to re-appear again. The printed statement of fuel consumption is produced to the RTO officials, who then take the final decision on renewal of driving license.
The 5-kms stretch is approved by the RTO. Officials said that the 5-kms stretch to be used for driving has a plain road, curves, slopes, etc. Officials said that heavy vehicles consume heavy quantity of fuel and the aim of the government is to ensure that drivers of heavy vehicles improve their style of driving which could help in saving it.
