Aadhaar could be made mandatory for driving licenses

The government is planning to link driving license with the unique identity number Aadhaar in order to curb issue of duplicate and fake licenses, union minister for electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Friday. Prasad who was speaking at the Digital Haryana Summit 2017 added that he has already had a word Nitin Gadkari, minister for road transport & highways regarding the linkage.

“We are planning to link driving licence to Aadhaar. I have had a word with Gadkari Ji regarding this,” said Prasad. “So digital identity confirms physical identity with the help of digital technology,” the minister added.

A transport ministry official said that they may not be able to comment since it is a state matter and transport is not in central list. “We’ll only be able to comment after we consult states. However, from our side we’re already getting the entire database of driving license in the country on a common platform so that there’s no duplication anymore,” said the official.

On Friday, the Government of Haryana in association with NASSCOM hosted the first edition of the Digital Haryana Summit in Gurgaon where they announced a slew of policies for the startups, IT and electronics sector. The new set of policies include, IT & ESDM Policy, Tower Policy, Start Up Policy, Cyber Security Policy and SARAL Citizen delivery tracking Portal.

The state government in association with NASSCOM also announced the opening of startup warehouse in Gurgaon, with an eighty-four seater capacity along with a mobile application development incubation center within the warehouse to boost the startup ecosystem. A Centre for IoT (Internet of Things), Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), and incubation centres were also unveiled.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar along with officials of the state and companies such as Genpact and Microsoft were also present during the day long summit.

Haryana hopes to attract investment of Rs 20,000 crore besides generating employment opportunities for about 1.2 lakh youth with the launch of the IT and ESDM policy today, said Khattar.
