June 2024: When Digital Infrastructure Needed Discipline

There are moments in a startup journey when progress does not look like growth.

Sometimes it looks like disruption.

Sometimes an entire ecosystem has to change its way of working before it can become more efficient.

June 2024 was one such phase for India’s transportation ecosystem.

The implementation of One Vehicle, One FASTag brought a major change to the way FASTags were being managed across the country. From April 1, 2024, NHAI implemented the initiative to ensure that one vehicle was linked with only one active FASTag.

On paper, it sounded simple.

In reality, it touched thousands of users, banks, balances, compliance processes and operational practices across the FASTag ecosystem.

And for us, it was another important signal about where the industry was heading.

One Vehicle. One FASTag. One Cleaner System.

Over the years, FASTag had become an important part of India’s highway infrastructure.

But as adoption grew, so did the complexity.

Multiple FASTags could be associated with a single vehicle. Some users had incomplete KYC. Tags could remain active even when they were no longer being used. Incorrect placement of FASTags could also affect toll plaza operations.

The new framework was designed to bring discipline into the system.

One vehicle. One active FASTag.

It meant cleaning up what had accumulated while the ecosystem was growing rapidly.

For many people, this created inconvenience.

For banks and FASTag issuers, it meant operational changes.

For users, it meant checking KYC, identifying active tags and dealing with deactivated FASTags.

For the industry, however, it represented something bigger.

Standardisation.

Every Transition Has a Cost

One of the things we started understanding more deeply was that infrastructure transformation is rarely frictionless.

Whenever a large ecosystem moves from an old process to a better one, there are people and businesses that feel the impact first.

Balances have to be reconciled.

Old accounts have to be closed.

Systems have to communicate with each other.

Customers have to be educated.

Banks have to adapt.

Technology providers have to integrate.

And somewhere in between all of this, the truck driver still needs to keep moving.

That is what makes transportation different.

You cannot simply switch off an old system and wait for the new one to settle.

The road keeps moving.

From FASTag to the Bigger Question

For us, this also connected with the questions we had been asking for months.

What happens when tolling becomes completely digital?

What happens when vehicles do not need to stop?

What happens when FASTag, ANPR, vehicle identity and government systems work together?

What happens when tolls, state taxes, permits and other road-related payments can eventually become seamless?

The answer cannot simply be another application.

It needs an ecosystem.

And that ecosystem needs clean data, verified identities, standardised processes and reliable infrastructure.

The One Vehicle, One FASTag initiative reinforced that belief.

Digital infrastructure needs digital discipline.

The Hidden Work Behind a Seamless Highway

When a vehicle passes through a toll plaza without stopping, it looks effortless.

But behind that few seconds are multiple systems working together.

The vehicle needs to be identified.

The FASTag needs to be valid.

The account needs to be linked correctly.

The transaction needs to be processed.

The balance needs to be maintained.

The system needs to know which vehicle it belongs to.

And when something goes wrong, there needs to be a mechanism to resolve it.

That is the part of digital infrastructure that people rarely see.

The smoother the experience becomes for the end user, the more complicated the infrastructure behind it often becomes.

What We Were Learning as a Startup

This phase reinforced an important startup lesson for us.

Don’t just build for today’s problem. Build for the system that tomorrow will demand.

When we started exploring digital tolling, FASTag integrations and ANPR-based possibilities, many of these ideas were still being discussed as possibilities.

Now, the ecosystem itself was moving in that direction.

Policies were creating stronger standards.

Technology was becoming more integrated.

States and authorities were exploring more seamless ways of collecting road-related charges.

And the industry was gradually becoming comfortable with the idea that vehicles should not have to stop for every transaction.

For a startup operating in this space, that was encouraging.

It also meant the responsibility was getting bigger.

Better Infrastructure Requires Better Foundations

The transition was not perfect.

It affected people.

It created confusion.

It required changes in processes and systems.

But perhaps that is the nature of building better infrastructure.

Before a system becomes seamless, it often has to go through a phase of cleaning, correcting and standardising.

And that was the bigger lesson we took from this period.

The goal is not simply to digitise the old system.

The goal is to build a system that works better because it is digital.

That difference matters.

Startup Lesson: Growth Needs Discipline

One of the strongest lessons from this phase was:

Technology can create scale, but discipline makes scale sustainable.

FASTag had already demonstrated what digital adoption could do for highways.

The next challenge was making the ecosystem cleaner, more reliable and more integrated.

For us, it was another step in the journey from simply participating in transportation technology to thinking about how the entire logistics ecosystem could become more connected.

There was still a long road ahead.

But the direction was becoming clearer.

The future of highways would not just be about faster vehicles or wider roads.

It would be about smarter infrastructure, cleaner data, seamless transactions and systems that work quietly in the background.

And sometimes, building that future begins with fixing the things that everyone has become accustomed to.
