Come December 1, it will be compulsory for all commercial and private vehicles plying on national highways to pay toll using FASTag.

However, vehicle owners in the region have complained that banks are not responding despite repeated attempts to buy FASTags online. Sources also maintained that some points of sale don’t have enough FASTags .

NHAI claims that FASTags are issued by 23 certified banks, including public and private sector banks, some small finance banks, payments banks and co-operative banks. Syndicate Bank officials, hoever, claimed that they are yet to receive tags. “Currently, we don’t have any Fastags. We will let you know once it comes,” said an official on the condition of anonymity. Insiders also maintained that there is shortage of tags at toll plazas. One customer said he was unable to buy Fastag online. “I tried to purchase FASTag through one of the private sector bank portals. However, despite repeated attempts, the process didn’t go through,” said Amandeep, another customer.

NHAI officials said they would ensure that people get FASTags easily. “We are organising special camps at public places to issue Fastags on the spot. But still, if people are facing issues, we will try to resolve them,” said Vishal Gupta, Chief General Manager, (Punjab & Haryana), NHAI.

NHAI officials said they are selling around 5,500-6,000 FASTags daily at toll plazas and another 1,000 online in Punjab and Haryana. On an average, the daily transactions through FASTags in Punjab and Haryana are around 23 per cent.

What is it

FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle and enables a customer to make the toll payment directly from the bank account or wallet linked to it without the need to stop at the toll booth

Why it’s important

From December 1, any vehicle entering a FASTag lane without a tag will have to pay two times the applicable fee for that category of vehicle.
