Overloaded trucks on RTA radar, drive on

GURUGRAM: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has generated revenue of Rs 75 lakh so far in August by issuing challans to overloaded trucks.

“A surprise inspection was conducted on Tuesday and I found 14 overloaded vehicles at Vatika Chowk. The challans were issued to the tune of Rs 6.81 lakh,” Raza told TOI.
Moreover, he said, the Authority has been conducting checks and issuing challans to overloaded vehicles on regular basis, however, the department plans to step it up further.
According to the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019, now the overloaded vehicles would attract a penalty of Rs 20,000 and Rs 2,000 per extra tonne. Earlier, the penalty for overloaded vehicles was Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 per extra tonne. Moreover, overloading of passengers will now invite a penalty of Rs 1,000 per extra passenger as per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
The RTA had issued a total of 2,477 challans in the 2018-19 fiscal year and generated a revenue of Rs 8.45 crore. While, the revenue generated in the 2017-18 was Rs 3.36 crore and a total of 1,294 challans were issued.
According to the data of the last five years of overloading challans, the RTA, Gurugram, issued the highest number of challans for overloading in 2016-17 when the department issued a total of 4,700 challans, generating revenue of Rs 7.86 crore.
In 2015-16, the RTA, Gurugram, issued a total of 3,322 challans and generated revenue of Rs 6.62 crore and the number of challans was 3,687 in 2014-15 and the revenue of Rs 4.39 crore was generated by issuing challans to overloaded trucks.
