Gaya-Patna road repair work-NHAI

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), on April 24, 2014 awarded the Rs 2015 crore contract to IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Limited.

GAYA: Virtually washing its hands off, the state government has passed the buck to NHAI for the repair of Gaya-Patna stretch of NH-83 linking the state capital with the Grand Trunk road near Dobhi in Gaya district. A few days back, the Patna high court took serious note of the poor condition of Gaya-Patna road and disapprovingly compared it with the fine condition of the road linking the state capital with Biharsharif.

Gaya-Patna road repair work hit as state govt blames NHAI

The Gaya-Patna road is dotted by pot holes all along the route. According to Danish, a driver frequently shuttling between Gaya and Patna, a large number of road users now take either the Kurtha-Kinjar or Khizarsarai-Ekangarsarai route for going to Patna.

Asked about the repair of the Gaya-Patna Road, road construction department principal secretary Amrit Lal Meena said being a national highway, the NHAI is mandated to maintain the  road. “The state government, on its part is persuading the agency to get the road repaired at the earliest,” Meena said.
Earlier, Gurgaon-based IL &FS Engineering and Construction Committee Limited abandoned the execution of the road project for four-laning of the NH-83 including the Gaya-Patna stretch of the road. As per stories doing the rounds, the construction company virtually duped the government by taking more money than the actual work done. However, officials are not ready to say anything on record.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), on April 24, 2014 awarded the Rs 2015 crore contract to IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Limited for executing the four-laning project of NH-83, linking the all important GT road with the state capital. The NHAI fixed April 9, 2018 as the deadline for the construction job.
Besides four-laning of the 127 km stretch between Dobhi and Patna, the company was to construct 11 major bridges, 17 minor bridges, three service roads, three road overbridges and  218 culverts. Japan International Cooperation agency is funding the project.

The project hit several road blocks including delay in land acquisition and problems like environmentally protected water bodies. The four lane road is to criss-cross three districts like–Gaya, Jehanabad and Patna.

Once the four-laning job was complete, the distance between Patna and Gaya airports would be covered in about 100 minutes. As of now, on account of poor road condition and traffic jams at different points including Chakand, Belaganj, Makhdumpur, Jehanabad, Beldari Chak and Sampat Chak etc, the average travel time between Gaya and the state capital is more than four hours, say road users.

According to well-placed sources, nearly half of the Rs 2015 crore have been ear marked for compensating land owners and the remaining amount would be spent on earth work, concretization, black topping and bridge construction etc.
