Vehicle tracking system for trucks and RFID tags for bins
The municipal corporation has invited private companies for installing the RFID tags for bins and GPS based vehicle tracking system for trucks to ensure effective garbage clearance in the city.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) plans to install vehicle tracking system for 750 trucks and Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) tags for 4,500-odd dumper bins, are falling in track with two private companies demonstrating equipment and participating in the technical tests.
The municipal corporation has invited private companies for installing the RFID tags for bins and GPS based vehicle tracking system for trucks to ensure effective garbage clearance in the city.
“We are conducting test runs by installing vehicle tracking system for a couple of trucks and RFID tags for few bins. Once the tests are successful, financial aspects will be discussed,” said a senior official.
The objective behind in utilising tracking system and tags was to keep a check on the loopholes in the existing manual garbage collection and disposal practices. Most workers tend to take undue advantage of the system.
GHMC utilises trucks, auto trolleys and workers for collection and disposal of waste generated in all the 30 circles in its limits. However, there is no proper mechanism to track a truck whether it visited the designated route or a point for lifting garbage.
Officials also have difficulties in tracking the vehicles’ movement and check its compliance with fixed time and schedules. Likewise, it is also a challenge for them to monitor the lifting of waste from a particular dumper bin.
To fix all these issues, the municipal corporation is now seeking the assistance of private companies in providing necessary software, the supply of GPS devices, RFID tags, RFID readers, develop a portal etc, said a senior official from GHMC.
