Accident Insurance Scheme for Transport Drivers
Transport drivers can avail accident insurance benefit up to Rs5 lakh by paying only Rs12. The state government has come up with the accident insurance scheme and aims to cover about 5.8 lakh transport drivers in the state. According to the details furnished by Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials to labour department, there are about 5.8 lakh transport drivers in Telangana, including auto, lorry and cab drivers. ‘’We aim to bring all of them under insurance cover,’’ said S Naresh Kumar, deputy commissioner labour, Rangareddy district, announcing the details of the insurance scheme. To avail the benefit, transport drivers have to enrol themselves in the Pradhan Manthri Suraksha Bhima Yojana (PMSBY) by paying Rs12 as premium, after opening a savings bank account in the prescribed proforma at any nationalised bank. Those who already have savings bank account can ask the bank officials to comply the account with PMSBY, for getting accident insurance policy. “The beneficiary will be eligible for Rs5 lakh accident insurance out of which Rs2 lakh shall be covered under PMSBY and the balance Rs3 lakh will be borne by the state government through a group insurance scheme.
Even Rs12 paid by the driver will be reimbursed by the state government, after furnishing the details of savings account to labour department,” said P Srinivas, deputy commissioner of labour, Hyderabad – I. The insurance policy will cover partial and full disability besides death, in case of an accident. Transport drivers aged between 18 to 70 years are eligible for the policy. Deputy commissioner of labour, Hyderabad -II, Hanumantha Rao was also present on he occasion. Awareness programme: To create awareness on the accident insurance policy for transport drivers, an awareness programme will be held by labour department at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram on Saturday. A facilitation counter will be set up by the SBH at the programme to help drivers open savings bank account in prescribed format for enrolling in Pradhan Manthri Suraksha Bhima Yojana.
