Is Samsung Safety Truck makes driving safe?
In a country with hundreds of two-lane roads can mean drivers often can’t see the road for the cars and take a risk that can prove fatal when they attempt to overtake large vehicles like transport trucks. Getting stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a one-lane road is never fun. You can’t see what’s ahead, you’re choking on fumes, and moving at a snail’s pace. Mostly accidents happen at the time when people try to overtake the vehicle.
So far, it seems that accidents only occur when humans are in control – which seems to indicate that humans are their own worst enemy on the road.
The logic goes something like this: when humans are in manual control, things happen imperfectly, but computer-generated devices would outperform human-operated ones. Of course, this type of thinking is based upon the intelligence of the programmer. But, all things being equal, the driverless vehicle could perform better without human intervention and/or error.
In an attempt to make the roads safer for drivers, Samsung has unveiled a new ‘transparent’ truck.
Samsung’s launched the “Safety Truck” in market. It uses a wireless camera on the truck’s front grille, which connects to four displays on the rear of the truck. Vehicles behind the truck can see if another car is approaching (even in the dark), and pass the truck when the coast is clear.
If you’re stuck behind a large truck, you’ll have a clear, real-time view of oncoming traffic. You can also see any obstacles or traffic that might otherwise catch you off guard.
“This allows drivers to have a better view when deciding whether it is safe to overtake,”.
Another advantage of the Safety Truck is that it may reduce the risk of accidents caused by sudden braking or animals crossing the road.”
Even more impressive is the camera includes night vision capabilities, meaning the technology works both day and night.
Argentina was selected for the testing of the technology due to its two lane roads being responsible for a high number of traffic accidents.
The prototype has since been pulled from the roads, but Samsung has said it will continue to develop the technology with the assistance of non-profits and government regulators.
Now, lets see how much this innovation would be practically beneficial for the vehicles travelling on highways. There is, of course, always the possibility that people would get distracted and/or confused by the truck’s rear panels. Yet, the company requires to comply with lots of formalities. “The next step is to perform the corresponding tests in order to comply with the existing national protocols and obtain the necessary permits and approvals,” it said. “For this, Samsung is working together with safe driving NGOs and the government.”
