Surat RTO to act tough on commercial vehicles plying without HSRP

The regional transport office (RTO) will act tough against the owners of commercial vehicles including trucks, autorickshaw and tempos plying on city roads without the mandatory High Security Number Plates (HSRP) beginning Saturday.
Official sources said that the department had issued an ultimatum to the transport and commercial vehicle owners to get their vehicles fitted with HSRPs latest by June 30. Very less number of commercial and transport vehicles have actually fitted the HSRP. However, a decision has been taken to initiate a drive to catch violators and fine them Rs 500 under the Motor Vehicle Act.

The Diamond City has around 96,000 autorickshaws and that less than 10 per cent have fitted the HSRP plates. Same is the case with transport vehicles including trucks, tempo and buses.

RTO authorities have pulled their sock for a massive exercise of fitting HSRPs, which will help the police in tracking stolen and missing vehicles, vehicles used in the crime and accidents on roads.

“The department has time and again issued notifications for the commercial and transport vehicles in the city to replace the old number plates with HSRPs. However, very less have turned up. Thus, we had issued a final ultimatum to get the HSRP fitted latest by June 30, or else be prepared to face action,” said in-charge regional transport officer (RTP), K G Kalavadiya.

The HSRP has a chromium-based hologram with ‘chakra’ image, sticker with the engine and chassis number and non-removable and non-reusable snap lock.
